At Forty Thieves, we’re always looking for practical ways to contribute to conservation efforts in Aotearoa. That’s why we’ve partnered with Pest Free Hibiscus Coast to support the protection of our native wildlife. This group is a subset of Forest & Bird, one of New Zealand’s leading environmental organisations.
Why Nut Butters?
Pests like rats and stoats are strongly attracted to the scent of nut butter. By donating jars to Forest & Bird’s regional groups, we’re helping supply a reliable, non-toxic lure for community trapping programmes.
Used in trap lines, this helps reduce predator numbers in native habitats, giving birds like tūī, pīwakawaka, and kiwi a better chance to survive and breed. Because our nut butters are made from natural ingredients, they also offer an alternative to synthetic lures.
Supporting Forest & Bird’s Team
The real magic happens through Forest & Bird’s incredible network of volunteers. These backyard heroes spend their time trekking through rugged terrain to maintain trap lines. By supplying these groups with the bait they need, we’re supporting the people on the front lines of conservation.
Our partnership focuses on three key areas:

- Improving trapping effectiveness: The strong scent makes traps more attractive to pests
