08 Nov Our Salted Caramel Macadamias Come In Compostable Bags
If we could collect all the macadamias that have been devoured by friends, family and the team BEFORE they become our award-winning Salted Macadamia with Maple & Vanilla Butter, we’d have a giant treasure chest full of the tasty golden nuggets.
Which got us thinking…why not offer our delicious macadamias to all of you good folk before they meet their fate (and get crushed?)
So what’s been stopping us?
For over a year, we have been thinking about how to package these tasty NZ-grown, spray-free nuts in their pre-crushed form WITHOUT simply bagging them up in single-use plastic. And while plastic is by far the cheapest, most accessible option and it certainly is the most appealing to the eye, it simply didn’t make sense for us to use it.
You may know that Forty Thieves Nut Butters come in glass jars (Made from up to 90% recycled glass) metal lids and FSC® approved paper labels. These are then packed in FSC® approved cardboard cartons. Earlier this year we successfully ditched bubble wrap from our online orders and moved to a new eco-packaging option despite the increase in cost. So you can imagine that it simply did not feel right to offer our macadamias in single-use plastic bags when we have worked hard to avoid the stuff. Learn why single-use plastic is bad here >
What’s makes Econic® packaging different?
When we finally discovered Econic, we were super excited to learn that the bags were made from a combination of compostable films derived from sustainable and renewable resources. It has been designed to decompose in home composting systems that contain the right amount of heat, water, oxygen, soil and micro-organisms, meeting the European or Australian home compostable standards.
How do you dispose of Econic® Bags?
After removing the paper label and recycling, you can simply put your used Econic bags in your own home compost or worm farm, containing heat, water, oxygen, soil and micro-organisms. According to Ember, New Zealand’s Econic Partner, “Compost trials have shown that Econic bags can break down into small fragments in as little as 16 weeks…the rate of breakdown will vary depending on the compost environment, temperature and humidity.” Alternatively, it can also be disposed of in a commercial composting facility.
How do we make our Salted Caramel Macadamias?
Made from a combination of pieces and whole nuts, our Salted Caramel Macadamias are tossed in organic coconut sugar and a touch of pink salt (and that’s it!) and then roasted to golden perfection. If you discover a cluster in your pack, stash or devour that goodness before someone tries to steal it from you.
